Wendy Wood 1892-1981 - Scotland’s freedom is coming

Born in Kent, daughter of a highland crofter. She came to Scotland aged 12 where she became a fervent nationalist. In 1916 she founded the Scottish League and became a member of the Home Rule Association.

She joined the SNP when it was formed in 1928. She often spoke at Edinburgh’s Hyde Park Corner - The Mound. She worked with the youth movement of the SNP - The Scottish Watch, which was founded in 1931.

She joined a protest in 1932 at Stirling Castle to replace the Union Jack with the Lion Rampant.

Appointed Publicity officer of organising committee of Scottish Representatives to British Congress where she tried to bring notice of, as she claimed, treaty violations to the Council of Europe and the United Nations.

Opposed emigration to Australia - organised a public burning of emigration papers - Slogan was “Don’t go”.

Founded Scottish Patriots in 1949.

In 1953 extracted a promise from Sir Thomas Innes and Lord Lyon that the E II R should be removed from PO boxes, Royal Mail vans etc. as was E I R in Scotland. Objected wherever it reappeared.

Campaigned for Scottish stamps on the special issues. Eg. Burns 1966, New Town 1967, Wallace 1968.

Great cry was that “Scotland’s freedom is coming”.
