Jenny Geddes
Various tales around Jenny throwing her stool at the bishop after the 1637 schism of the Protestant church. All are on the theme that the service was too Catholic for her.
One source says it was St Giles and she shouted “Dost thou say mass in my lug”
Another that is was at the Tolbooth Kirk - some reference to the bishop being begotten by the devil.
However the Oxford companion to Scottish History says it legend from 19th Cent.
St Giles' Cathedral has a memorial to her act.
