Lyne Kirk

lyne kirkLyne is said to be the smallest parish church in Scotland. The church is located on the site of a 12th-century church, the present one was built between 1640 and 1645 by John Hay of Yester (later 1st Earl of Tweeddale).

The traceried gothic windows are original but the porch was added in the 19th century. The church retains its 17th-century interior and of particular interest are the Dutch pulpit and canopied pews dated 1644, also the pre-reformation font.

gravestone The earliest stone in the graveyard is dated 1707; the Adam and Eve stone dated 1712 is very rare.

Just west of the church lie the remains of a small Roman fort. It was built in AD158 but was probably in use for less than 50 years.

Across the Peebles - Broughton road on the way to Lyne Station there are for two standing stones in a field. Lyne station was on the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway. the same that ran across the viaduct near Neidpath. It is possible to walk though on the track bed.
